Sitting with the No. 2 overall selection in the 2012 NFL Draft, head coach Jeff Fisher and the St. Louis Rams can dictate where former Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III will begin his NFL career.
Because the Rams spent 2010's No. 1 pick on Sam Bradford and have more holes on the roster than a slice of baby Swiss, it's all but guaranteed that Fisher will look to trade out of the No. 2 spot for a slew of picks in return.
At least three teams—the Washington Redskins, Miami Dolphins and Cleveland Browns—are thought to be hot on the RG3 bandwagon. None of the three aforementioned teams have a franchise quarterback in place, which is why the Rams' pick will be so hotly coveted.
All the Rams need to do is find the right trade partner, and according to Michael Lombardi of the NFL Network, Mike Shanahan and the Redskins seem to fit the bill.
Shanahan and 'Skins owner Dan Snyder have shown the ability to be absolutely unpredictable when it comes to personnel moves, and seeing as their NFC East division rival just upped the ante by winning the Super Bowl, led by a franchise quarterback in Eli Manning, the time to make a bold move is now.
The boldest move for the Redskins would involve finding a way to get Peyton Manning to D.C. next season, as long as his neck is healthy, but RG3 would most certainly be the next best thing.
RG3 is thought to be an upgraded version of 2011's No. 1 overall pick and reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year Cam Newton—the kind of quarterback who possesses all the tools. The same tools that made quarterbacks like John Elway, Steve Young and Aaron Rodgers the players they were and are today. The former Baylor Bear has a cannon for an arm, has the ability to move the pocket and is extremely savvy when it comes to making the right decisions.
While there is no guaranteeing his skills will translate to success at the NFL level, the potential upside is far too great to ignore—even at the steep price the Rams will likely command.
